EPA WaterSense recommends checking a meter during a period when no water is being used and comparing readings later. Irrigation, treatment equipment, toilets, appliances, and scheduled devices should be accounted for before assuming the leak is concealed.

Narrow the system before opening finishes
A plumber may compare meter behavior, isolate accessible branches, review pressure, inspect visible piping and fixtures, and use the symptom pattern to narrow the likely system. No single test sees through every material and finish.
